Set in the 60's, this is the story of five young black men who form a musical group and find success, but a lot of problems and temptations along the way. Gene plays a sleazy record producer who meets them early in the game and tells them he loves their song...but there's a catch! However, he's hardly the least trustworthy person they encounter. Some interesting character twists. I know it sounds like a half-dozen other movies you're already seen, but I thought it was unique and well-acted. Diahann Carroll is particularly excellent as the wife of the group's manager.
